Throughout the summer, Rachel interned with the Allegheny County Conservation District, assisting with the organization’s revitalization efforts. Her duties focused on traveling to sites around the region — often vacant lots and unused green spaces — to test soil for lead as part of the Urban Soils Program. Alexis spent her summer interning with Grounded Strategies and providing environmental research support for community projects and workdays. Much of her research focused around wildflower planting and looking to the best, most sustainable practices in implementing a wildflower garden. During her time with City Semester Pittsburgh, Kate interned with the Breathe Project to analyze data coming from Purple Air monitors in the Pittsburgh area. She used GIS software and other tools to perform data analysis and help with a variety of campaigns and projects for the Breathe Collaborative. Maddie Ryan

Maddie’s internship with Riverlife gave her a wide range of experiences from working in an office with team members to attending community events and festivals and doing fieldwork along Pittsburgh’s riverfronts. She researched city neighborhoods, studied GIS data, and helped with work on Riverlife’s “Completing the Loop” master plan and community engagement. Veronica Sciulli

For her City Semester internship with Three Rivers Waterkeeper, Veronica served as Swim Guide and helped to monitor and track the conditions of several waterways in Pittsburgh. Each week, she would visit sites around the city to gather water samples and test them for E.coli, then provide the public with information on the safety of these recreational sites. For his City Semester Pittsburgh experience, Matt spent his summer at Covestro and took part in the company’s intern sustainability challenge with several other peers. His team examined the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals and proposed ideas for sustainable growth.
