Pittsburgh Connect: Spring Break Service Day

Pittsburgh Connect: Spring Break Service Day is a community-centered alternative spring break experience for Penn State students who want to give back, explore mission-driven careers, and stay connected to Pittsburgh while home for break.

Hosted by the Franco Harris Pittsburgh Center at Penn State, and open to Penn State students from any campus or college, this experience brings together students for service, learning, and connection with Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organizations. Participants will meet on site at a local community partner location and spend the day engaging in meaningful volunteer work while learning more about careers in nonprofit and public service fields.

What to Expect

Spring Break Service Day participants will:

Volunteer with a Pittsburgh nonprofit addressing real community needs such as food insecurity, environmental sustainability, or neighborhood revitalization
Learn how mission-driven organizations operate through discussions and networking with nonprofit professionals
Connect with Penn State students from across campuses and majors
Enjoy light refreshments

Volunteer Locations and Details

Families Matter Food Pantry serves families across Western Pennsylvania by addressing food insecurity and promoting access to nutritious food in a welcoming, community-centered environment.

Volunteer: 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
On-site lunch: 12:30 p.m.

Volunteer Activities: Students will assist with daily operations that help the pantry serve individuals and families in need. Volunteer activities may include supporting food distribution efforts, organizing and stocking supplies, and helping prepare the space for community use.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank works to address food insecurity across the region by providing access to nutritious food and connecting neighbors to additional resources that support long-term stability.

On-site lunch: 11:30 a.m.
Volunteer: 12:15–4:00 p.m.

Volunteer Activities: Students will volunteer with The Market, a grocery store–style food pantry operated in partnership with Giant Eagle. Volunteers will support daily operations that help ensure community members can access fresh food in a dignified, welcoming environment. Activities may include stocking shelves, assisting neighbors, and helping prepare grocery orders.
