During her internship with Green Building Alliance, Hiba worked with the 2030 district team as a data analysis and research intern. She performed tasks including attending and documenting meetings with partners, maintaining the database and progress reports for partners, performing data entry and analysis on energy start portfolio manager and Maalka, and conducting research on capital improvement planning for small businesses.

Noah Bridge

Major: Mechanical EngineeringCommunity Partner: Pittsburgh Department of City Planning

Noah’s internship at the Department of City Planning supported the city’s goal of reducing emissions from energy generation and distribution by focusing on increasing access to solar energy in the city. His work included researching areas in Pittsburgh where solar projects are viable opportunities for city residents, businesses, and city-operated facilities.

Mark Hinlo

Major: Environmental EngineeringCommunity Partner: Allegheny County Conservation District

Mark served as the urban soils program intern at the Allegheny County Conservation District (ACCD). He helped to coordinate and execute site visits for soil lead screening and conducted community outreach for monthly soil lead screening pop-ups within the county. One major project he worked on was using ArcGIS to create a historically representative map of all completed lead screenings to help ACCD identify underserved areas that could benefit from outreach and education.

Madison Mascellino

Community Partners: Studio for Spatial Practice, Tree Pittsburgh

During her internship with Studio for Spatial Practice, Madison joined site visits to evaluate how past projects have evolved and to document conditions for upcoming work. Her primary responsibility was to develop a SketchUp model for the proposed project at the Brashear CARES Community Center. During her internship at the Tree Pittsburgh nursery, she worked with volunteers, transplanting seedlings into larger pots, maintaining nursery health through fertilizing and weeding, and managing thousands of young trees.

Sandor Strnisa

Major: Landscape ArchitectureCommunity Partner: Tree Pittsburgh

Sandor spent the summer interning at the Tree Pittsburgh Heritage Nursery where he helped to maintain several aspects of the site. He transplanted trees with volunteer groups, weeded the tree pots and surrounding landscape, pruned the trees to ensure ideal growth, and helped with side projects such as repairing the chicken-wire fence and the rainwater collection system. In addition to the hands-on work, Sandor was able to become Tree Tender certified and helped with the STEAM Outside Camp for 4th–6th graders.

Aiden Thornton

Community Partner: Riverlife

Aiden spent the summer working with Riverlife, exploring equity and access to Pittsburgh riverfront parks. He applied the Pathfinder Tool to conduct carbon audits on Allegheny Landing and Allegheny Riverfront parks, analyzing construction documents, and identifying opportunities to reduce carbon and climate impacts of the parks’ future construction. Aiden also helped assemble the Shore Thing barges.
