Energy
Working with the Penn State Center for Sustainability and the College of Engineering, department of Architectural Engineering, we have embarked on exciting opportunities to support workforce development and research in the areas of solar energy, smart grid technolgy, and energy efficient housing.
Green Roof Technologies
In partnership with the County of Allegheny Chief Executive's office, Pennsylvania Enviromental Council, 3 Rivers Wet Weather and Highmark, we continue to promote the use of green roofs in our highly impervious communities in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Among other benefits, storm water mitgation is of central importance. Research at the Penn State Center for Green Roof Research is being applied in our region to improve storm water management, energy balance, and other environmental impacts.
Pittsburgh Green Innovators
In partnership with Pittsburgh Gateways, Inc., the Pittsburgh Green Innovators is establishing a sustainable facility that supports a superlative quality of life and serves as this city’s emerald jewel by redeveloping the former Connelley Vo-Tech High School located in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. It engages multidisciplinary teams from business, labor, government, nonprofits, and universities, as well as experts from around the world who employ the science of sustainability to meet modern global challenges and provide world-renowned leadership in clean, green innovation.
Vacant Lot Reclamation
Pittsburgh has more than 14,600 vacant lots, according to a 2007 Carnegie Mellon University study. The Vacant Lot Reclamation initiative is an opportunity to both reduce the number of unkempt vacant lots and enhance approved community development projects along with their surrounding neighborhoods. This effort works with local community development corporations and other neighborhood organizations, and uses greening activities that match the needs of the community. Members of the local community help determine the most appropriate method to reclaim the lots, and local organizations and businesses provide volunteers for each effort.
