Penn State Assists in Development of First Multi-Municipal Shade GTree Commmission in Pennsylvania

The Penn State Center - Pittsburgh is excited to announce the development of the first multi-municipal Shade Tree Commission in Pennsylvania.  The Commission is comprised of the neighboring municipalities of Baldwin, Brentwood and Whitehall.  The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Multi-municipal Shade Tree Commission was finalized last night with an affirmative vote from Brentwood’s Council.  Dr.  [More]

Green Infrastructure Technical Workshops to Continue through Summer and Fall

The Penn State Center—Engaging Pittsburgh launched its Green Infrastructure Technical Workshop Series on April 12, with Sustainable Sites Initiative Primer. José Almiñana of the Technical Core Committee of the Sustainable Sites Initiative™ (SITES ™), and his associate, Laura Hansplant from Andropogon, conducted the workshop.  [More]

Summer Interns

The Penn State Center welcomes the following five students as interns at The Penn State Center for the summer semester:

Karl De Ciantis, a communications major at the University of Pittsburgh, will enter his senior year in the fall. He looks forward to working on the Summer Dreamers program and helping at the Rosedale Block Cluster with their effort to implement and operate a sustainable urban garden.  [More]

Penn State Landscape Architecture Student Wins Award

At the April 2011 American Society of Landscape Architects’ Pennsylvania-Delaware chapter annual meeting at Skytop Lodge in the Poconos, Josh Lippert, a Penn State landscape architecture student, received a Merit Award for his student project in West Pittsburgh.

This project, the Corliss Art Corridor, was part of the Pittsburgh Studio that Professor Ken Tamminga holds each fall. Josh chose to create a new gateway through the Corliss Tunnels into Sheraden, a Pittsburgh city neighborhood.  [More]

Students’ Green Dreams Turn into Reality

Summer Dreamers targets middle school students’ summer slump by immersing them in a highly engaging learning environment and exploring sustainability in science and technology. The “Get Green. Make Green.” program is designed for students to investigate urban farming, sustainable landscaping, renewable energy, and green entrepreneurship, through Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.  [More]

Penn State Landscape Architecture Professor Wins Magrath Award

Penn State landscape architecture Professor Ken Tamminga was named the northeast regional winner of the 2011 Outreach Scholarship W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) and the National Outreach Scholarship Conference. The Magrath Award looks to identify colleges and universities that have redesigned their learning, discovery, and engagement functions to become even more involved with their communities.  [More]
